Some toner cartridges are provided with a fill plug while others are not. Just present pertinent info to toner refill kit resellers such as the cartridge's part number as well as the printer model and brand, and surely you'll be furnished with the materials and tools necessary to refill an empty toner cartridge. The HP 92298A toner cartridge - like most HP cartridges, do not come with a fill plug. Therefore, the user will be required to create a fill hole over its plastic casing with the use of a refill tool before proceeding with the cartridge's replenishment.

Refill Tool

The refill tool is basically an improvised soldering iron that is used to melt the polycarbonate shell of the cartridge. With its heated copper head, a fill hole is created vertically through the casing to partly expose the ABS compartment of the toner hopper. The refill tool is usually sold separately from the toner refill kit so the user will have to buy one before conducting the refill.

Refill Materials and other Tools

Conducting cartridge refills has become so convenient with the retail of refill kits such as the HP 4 toner refill kit. Out of the box, the user will find most of the items necessary for the refill, including a 340 gram bottle of refill toner powder, a pour lid, hole plug, instructional material and helpful tools such as a lint free cloth and latex gloves.

With the above mentioned materials and tools at hand, surely the user won't go through so much trouble in the replenishment process. Simply follow the instructions itemized with the guide and the cartridge will be up and running again for another cycle of printing in no time. Below is a preview of the toner refill process.

Creating a Fill Hole

Heat the refill tool by plugging it into an outlet. It takes around 3 minutes to get the tool ready for the task.
Position the refill tool's heated copper base on the cartridge's casing; over a spot that is directly above the toner's compartment.
Gently push the tool to melt a fill hole into the cartridge.
Once completed, unplug and set aside the refill tool.
